Dr. Jens Hannemann is a research assistant professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. His main research interest is in the field of high-performance computing applied to multimedia data signal processing and wave propagation. Dr. Hannemann built and maintains the Center's 88-node computer cluster. He explores new ways to interact with this supercomputer system so that researchers will face a much shallower learning curve when trying to leverage this computing power than with the traditional non-interactive, batch-processing based approach. His research enables the development of new, near-realtime algorithms that fuse networked sensor data to extract semantic information from auditory and visual scenes across wider areas. Dr. Hannemann is also developing a new algorithm to render spatial audio for immersive virtual environments that is both more flexible and economical than conventional approaches.
