Dr. Qiong Han is a research assistant professor in Computer Science. His research, as part of the Smart Image and STITCH projects, focuses on aiding minimally invasive surgeries (MIS) with the latest computational techniques. This includes three major components: collecting and pre-processing pre-operative images of a patient, building three-dimensional models and making surgical plans from the pre-operative images, and designing a display system to visualize the models and surgical plans during real time MIS procedures. Combining a deformable shape model method with 3D reconstruction techniques can show invaluable information surgeons are not able to see during traditional laparoscopic surgery. Dr. Han’s work will push MIS techniques forward to maximize the benefit and minimize the risk for patients in the future
