Dr. Hank Dietz is a professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Dr. Dietz doesn't do a lot of application research in the center, but he makes many center applications better - or possible. The key is to make the various hardware and software components of a computing system work better together. This approach led Dr. Dietz in February 1994 to build the world's first Linux PC cluster supercomputer and in 1996 to build the first compiler support for SWAR (SIMD Within A Register) instructions. He has continued to be a leader in the commodity-based parallel processing revolution, and his supercomputers have set a number of world records for performance and price/performance. Dietz's methods also can support new applications -- which as early as Fall 1994 included simple versions of both computational audio and video walls. Over the past several years, he has been making the hardware and software associated with digital cameras work better together. His work in this area ranges from the well-known "Digital Fisheye Imaging for Under $20" to integrated multi-spectral and multi-modal imaging described at SenScape.Org.
