Dr. Melody Carswell is an associate professor in the Department of Psychology and the Associate Director of the Vis Center. Dr. Carswell leads the Information Design and Usability Lab, and she is a co-principal investigator of the STITCH project (Surgical Technology Integration with Tools for Cognitive Human Factors). Her research is aimed at improving technology to make laparoscopy and other types of minimally invasive surgery less stressful, both physically and mentally, for the surgeon. More generally, Dr. Carswell studies how people use new visualization technologies in the context of real-world problem solving. For example, she has explored how first responders select viewpoints from a variety of two- and three-dimensional cityscapes when making decisions in the wake of a simulated natural disaster. Dr. Carswell has had an immense impact on the Vis Center and how we approach issues of human-computer interaction.
